Blanks for sale, shop news

Hey everyone! Autumn is in full swing here in North Carolina and it’s a beautiful one. The cooler weather is bringing in all the smells Stella can handle and the serious need to find some water to fish. As I write this, sitting in my favorite little rocking chair in my outer shop, listening to Patty Griffin, Greg Brown, Gillian Welch, Jason Isbell, etc. The chair is too small for me but feels just right. It’s great for guitar playing since it doesn’t have arms. My friend Jeff just stopped by and I’ve been talking with customers and going through rod blanks so far today. I don’t get many full shop days so I’m making sure to make it count and it feels good. Also! I figured out how to connect my phone to my computer so I can get some kind of remote wifi signal stuff. So far I’d call today a success.

As mentioned before, It’s been a struggle to have a consistent schedule in the rod shop. I’ve got all the rod orders I can handle which is a great problem to have! Because of that, I’ve decided again to stop taking orders so I can catch up on the past few months’ worth of preorders. For the time being, I will be listing blanks for sale on my website. I will have a selection of my Synthesis and Parabolic blanks of various configurations. Grab them while they’re available! I’m planning to have them listed in my store by the end of this week (28 October).

Jacob just stopped by. Great guy. He says hey. In other news, I have started working at a local outdoor shop called Great Outdoor Provision Co. helping with fly fishing and general adventure stuff. I’ve been there since late July and have grown to enjoy it quite a bit. As with all smaller outdoor shops, it’s a unique family of people thrown together because of work but staying together because of the relationships formed. It’s awesome and I really enjoy it. It should be a reality TV show. I’ve helped teach a couple fly fishing classes and the plan is to continue that several times a year. I might start tying flies again too. Maybe. Stop in when you’re in the area and say hey!

Swain took this picture. Not Darren.

Fishing has been minimal but really good. I took a friend from work and had the most amazing day. We flipped rocks and chased bugs and caught fish. The native brook trout were active and water levels are good. All I caught was a crawfish but it was still a fish. Get out while you can. Yay fishing!

Guy Clark’s ‘Stuff That Works’ just came on. A few weeks ago I was able to go visit my mom in the Austin, TX area for a very brief trip to celebrate her birthday. While there I had the opportunity to have a little whiskey time as well as some fishing time with my friend Aaron. It was fantastic and refreshing. Seeing my family in Texas! It had been way too long. Plus spending some quality time with The Boy. He’s almost taller than me. Almost. There’s nothing quite like a sunrise paddleboard adventure trying to remember how to use a spinning rod and a plastic worm while paddleboarding for the first time ever. I’m surprised I didn't fall in. Aaron pointed out that we caught more fish fly fishing than conventional gear fishing. So there’s that.

We ate well too. I ate more seafood, tacos, pasta, homemade MawMaw’s bread, tacos, Tex-Mex, and seafood than I’ve had in years and I don’t have any pics of the food (shout out to the two of you that appreciate the food pics) but I’m just now recovering from eating all that queso 24/7 for 3.5 days. So there’s that.

That’s about it from the shop today. Thanks for coming along! Holler if you want to stop in. Come see me at the GOPC if I’m not at the Rod shop.

Y’all take care and go fishing!

p.s. Watchhouse’s ‘These Old Wheels’ is closing us out now. Another good one.
